Don van Hout is a member of the Pembina Institute's Energy Watch team. Don's current focus is leading a grassroots initiative; an expedition along the entire length of the Athabasca River. He has led similar expeditions in Alberta designed to celebrate wild spaces in an effort to connect people with the natural environment and generate support for healthy river ecosystems. Don has helped to raise awareness of the Athabasca River and other wild spaces through film, media and other activities that have reached an audience of over 1.25 million people. Don was recognized by the Alberta Recreational Canoe Association for "significant work on environmental stewardship serving recreational paddlers and the broader Alberta public."

Don van Hout grew up in the town of Athabasca. He is an experienced nature interpreter and experiential educator, and has studied internationally. Don has a Bachelor of Applied Ecotourism and Outdoor Leadership.
