Oil Sands Watch | Pembina Institute

Tailings wagging the dog?

In 2010, one of the issues on our radar here at Pembina is going to be whether oil sands companies are held accountable for cleaning up the tailings waste created by the oil sands extraction process.

In December, my colleague Terra Simieritsch wrote an op-ed about some of the tailings management issues. Her article highlights Pembina’s assessment of company plans to meet new tailings clean up rules and asks the question: Is compliance with the rules optional? More detail about the tailings management plans is available in our report Tailings Plan Review.

In the coming weeks, I’ll outline some of the oil sands team’s developing research as we try to advance responsible oil sands development in 2010.

Concerning the tailing waste these companies should use it for power and steam generation, the technology is available they just have to implement it. I am a partner at True Green Energy Group we have the Biosphere MKV which is designed to consume all MSW and industrial waste with zero emissions. The Biosphere produces 5-8mgw/hr, steam, synthetic natural gas, Fischer-Tropsch fuel and methane out of products deemed unusable. If you would like to know more call me @ 1-360-301-1557 or e-mail me @ rdscommodities@gmail.com, it's very important to keep the oil sands projects moving while preserving the environment.
